Kijito Wind Power
website --
(in most browers this site should open in a new window)
there are different opinions about whether a windmill powered pump could solve our power and pumping needs, and if it would withstand some of the security questions. I can only remember seeing one operating wind pump in my five years in Tanzania. But there is almost always a good breeze in the area of the school, and the wind is free! These windmills are in use in many parts of East Africa. Andy Anderson, very experienced missionary with AIM, also located in a remote area along Lake Victoria, has repeatedly told me that he believes we should be looking into this technology. According to the Kijito website, they actually offer more security than diesel and petrol motors. After all, it would be pretty hard to secretly dismantle and carry off a windmill!! Supposedly they can be maintained locally, with a minimum of effort. But they are not cheap! But big savings could be realized on either electricity or fuel, and we would not need to wait for TANESCO (Tanzania's national power company) to run power to the Lake site (we've been waiting two years so far to get electricity to the school...this is AFTER paying for it!)
Over the past few years I have collected hundreds of website links related to water issues. For instance, on subjects related to water filtration and purificaton alone I probably have 100+ site links. So if you want to do research on a particular subject let me know...I may have some sites to suggest or post here. And if you have sites and resources which the rest of us would be interested in seeing let me know and I'll post them.
